This page presents many links on music.

1. Radio and Audio

The Prairie Home Companion radio show has been a favorite of mine for years. I listened to this a lot decades ago.

Speaking of radio, my by-far favorite radio station, hey, is Radio Alice (in wonderland). Click on the “listen live” button to … .

In the year 2017 my favorite radio station has changed to SOMA. I enjoy many of the musical genres that they offer. My favorite is “Alternative early 80’s British pop synch” and this includes bands like Devo and Oingo Boingo. My DJ buddy Mike Carlson at MC Audio gave me this tip when I was lounging in their excellent music boutique and playing around with some of the instruments. If you are near the Madison area and interested in anything having to do with music, MC Audio is a great place to check out.

A numbered list of some audio, radio, and ipod sources (mainly bloggish-type stuff) is given below.

Old list (2009): » 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 . I am preserving this list for historical reasons.

2. Music

This section is called Music, but it is really more about YouTube music via video.

2.1. Music Links

Also see this source for recent YouTube music. Here I list items chronologically as I find them. It can be more current than the current page and contains many spontaneous entries. Also see these general music notes for a broader discussion of music.

2.2. Pop Music

Here are some collections of music consisting mainly of YouTube videos of many of my favorite artists. I have a very wide taste in music.

I apologize for the many dead links. YouTube items tend to come and go fairly quickly.

This is kind of a forward looking chronology of music. Generally items are listed from new to old although there are exceptions, and the ordering is somewhat inaccurate especially as I add more items to this page.

I have been keeping this compendium since about 2005 and I regularly add items, and there is a wide selection of many kinds of music. However, I cannot believe that I have not mentioned the Beatles until the year 2018. Of course I have heard of them. I have mentioned individual members but the word “Beatles” did not appear on this page until 13 years had elapsed. Well here it is:

Fab Four The Beatles. As Ed Sullivan proudly introduced in the early 60’s, they were an incredible sensation that shook the music world. They grabbed the world center stage. Movie director Ron Howard in a PBS documentary on the Beatles notes that the Beatles are on the par with only two other musicians as far as quantity and quality of songs produced: they are Mozart and Shubert. We take them for granted as “just another pop group” but they already rank in the really big league in music.

There is so much Beatles material. Here is a very short list.

You probably think that the Beatles also hold the record for the largest number of singles sold. No. The record for the largest selling single is held by Bing Crosby, and the song is “White Christmas”.

A music listing would not be complete without Britney Spears.

Motown originated in Detroit. It is short for “Motor Town”. There is really a lot of fabulous Motown material, and only a small amount is listed here.

Stevie Wonder.

Perogative by Bobbie Brown: 1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 12.

Some Roy Orbeson links, songs, and videos are given below.

Johnny Cash - Bobby McGee.

Other favorite videos …

I consider Alanis Morissette to be the best lyricist since Bob Dylan. Her lyrics are deep and beautiful.

A good amount of material on Janis Jopin is found at YouTube. See the other compilations given below.

The Byrds is an old favorite group.

  • Byrds Mr. Tambourine Man. 4, 5 from 73, 6 McGuinn (only 6000 views), 7 with Tom Petty, 9. This is the first hit by the Byrds.

ELP.

The Who album Tommy. The Tommy rock opera got rave reviews by Time, and at the time was something you had to see and hear. This now is pure classic and is always something that you must see and hear.

Elton John

Ruby Jane Smith 1 2 3 4.

L. Gaga.

While my guitar gently wheeps: 3, 4, 5, 6.

Santana Soul Sacrifice, Woodstock 1969, Albert Hall in 1971. Jingo.

Procol Harum. Whiter Shade of Pale.

Eagles. 1 Hotel affair.

Wilbury’s. No comment.

The following WWII era songs are moving and deep. Jim Reeves and Vera Lynn were two of my father’s favorites. These artists represent a great timeless beauty.

Jim Reeves. You’re not too old fashioned to/for me. Welcome to my world.

Vera Lynn. (She looks a lot like my mother). Her songs were a strong morale booster for our troops during the many, many difficult moments of WWII.

Dean Martin

Andrews sisters: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Tommy Dorsey: Boogie.

In the Mood: 1.

Glen Miller: Moonlight Serenade.

Sammy Davis, Jr. songs (the one and only).

Tony Bennett

Mitch Miller. There is some wonderful old classic stuff here.

Shania

Shakira

Willie Nelson

Asleep at the Wheel / Ray Benson

  • Route 66.
  • Texas Way.
  • Hesitation Blues with W. Nelson.
  • Oh Pretty woman.
  • On Letterman.
  • At the Strawberry music festival. I have been to Strawberry. It is a neat small town in the High Sierra that I have stopped at several times while on photography trips. This was around 20 years ago. As I remember it is a monstrously large metropolis (for the High Sierra) of around 12 people. This is an interesting and happy memory as I have mentioned recently to some friends. There is a barn-like general store where I stopped to buy some food. I set up my tripod and snapped some photos also. This is a beautiful memory of a town nestled in the sugarpine forest. So when I saw that Asleep at the Wheel played there, I had to watch. This is really a nice show and Ray is with a whole new group of musicians, who are also fabulous. Related: 1, 2.
  • Bob Wills. 1.

Oingo Boingo. Dead Man’s Party. This is great punk. 1, 2.
