Madison Demonstration and Protest on March 12, 2011

Permalink: Madison Demonstration and Protest on March 12, 2011

The protests and march in Madison continues for the fourth week with the largest gathering yet. On Saturday March 12, police estimated the crowd to be from 85000 to 100,000 at its peak. I walked up and down State Street and around the capitol square and captured some of the emotion of the protest as well as the size of the crowd with my camera.

Madison is a student town and it turns out to be spring break time. So a good number of the students have left for Florida. I was therefore very surprised by the size of the turnout on this fourth Saturday of protests. Most of the people in the march and protest were 60's era people, many of whom had seen the Vietnam protests.

The crowds here are very large, and rival those of the Vietnam protests in the 60's in Madison.

I walked around all four sides of the Capitol square and the crowd was mostly shoulder to shoulder, and in places was very tight. As I rounded the last block of the square and headed down State Street, the crowd there had also swelled. I even missed the very peak of the crowd, which occurred in the later afternoon. But what I saw and photographed was busy enough.
