These items are more like short popular research articles. They are intended to be thought provoking and yet of popular interest.
Some of these articles are fiction but are used to illustrate true scientific or mathematical principles. In the case articles are fictional, there is still some underlying truth.
Multiplying like rabbits. Here is a fictional story, which first appeared around the time frame of 1998. We are reproducing it again in somewhat shortened form. The main body of the article though is essentially unchanged from what first appeared in 1998.
We are collecting some web references pertaining to the Fibonacci (and related) numbers.
Popular interest web and internet magazines. (Added 4/3/03). FEREGO's magazines discuss internet and technical aspects of the web. In particular, Goulash magazine is the simplest and might be simple reading for many. There are already many internet experts. This reference contains a starting list of magazine articles.
Stocks. Who doesn't like stocks? Have you ever had so much to drink that you couldn't pass the “straight line test.” (giggle, giggle). Well, here's an article on checking out the drunks on the Street. But what do drinking, driving on the Street, and the stock market have to do with each other? - A fictional story.
Other interpretations. The degree to which the stock market doesn't “walk the straight line” determines the likelihood of a financial catastrophe. Or stated another way, the degree to which you do not pass the “straight line test” determines the likelihood of having a crash on the Street.
Further, in a sense this can be thought of as the “ultimate equality” or “ultimate fairness” in which a staggering drunk is equal to all the smart money in a country. There are many beautiful results, including mathematical beauty, pertaining to this.
(Added 4/3/03). For a while we collected interesting links each day, and put out a new interesting item each day. Here is this old archive that grew out of this effort. The funny thing is that I thought it was going to be easy to find an interesting link along with an associated short comment every day. I did this for a month, and then I realized that this was very difficult. I also found that I could easily spend an hour or two just on this one small thing (pitiful). This makes me appreciate those columnists who have to come up with something original to say every day. So after pulling out all of the interesting links from my “favorites” I just done run out of interesting links & things – and this after only one month. Gasp. I thought I was more interesting than that. I guess my favorites collection was not that large.
